I am so happy I read this book. The author wrote this book about the life of her blind/deaf daughter. What an impact this little girl had in the world. You will laugh and cry reading through the stories. But as the reader, to me it is also about the life of an extrordinary woman who gave of her own life to rescue a child others would not want - and her family who let her do it. A must-read.Product details

Signing To The Angels Clair Muller 9780692328156 Books Reviews
That any one human could love a maximally "medically fragile"(with attitude) foster daughter this much and ALSO write this well is wondrous. C.Muller's sparse, quirky, humorous, and piercing account will captivate readers whose tastes range from Rolling Stone to Guideposts. Everyone considering parenting/fostering should read this book.
Signing to the Angels is amazing!!! It is a must read you will not be disappointed Claire is an amazing Mother with a big heart
Such a wondeful book!!! Claire is an amazing person and writer. So much so, that she pulled me right into her life and I feel that I know the "Bean" on a personal level! So inspiring! I cried alot of tears, but also smiled alot of smiles as I can see Claire, this quiet reserved lady that I didn't know then but have for the last few years, butting heads with this bright, fiery red head!! Being a foster parent today is so much un- noticed, gets alot of negative publicity and definetly not supported enough. I hope this book helps those who under estimate that selfless task!
Raising a child is difficult--especially when it's an adoptive child, and even more so when that precious soul has special needs. The author truly took on a great task when she adopted Shelley, a child plaugued with a several health problems in addition to having the inability to speak, visual impairment, and the inability to hear.
Ms. Muller does a wonderful job of allowing the reader to see what life is like for a parent of a child with special needs, and takes us on a journey of hope, tears, and tenacity.
Signing to the Angels is a n uplifting yet searing account of an adoptive mother's unconditional love for her deaf blind child. Claire Muller challenged the reader throughout...she does not hesitate to point out that her 35 foster children were rejected and unwanted for the flaws by their birth parents. She challenges the notion that the parents of disabled children and caregivers in general 'have no life' and celebrates the lessons that her daughter Shelly taught her and those she came into contact with. As the book races along, Claire's situation becomes increasingly difficult and the reader begins to wonder how she ever coped. But by trusting in God and with the support of family she overcomes and is able to impart valuable life lessons to the reader. A must read for anyone who is a parent, or indeed who may become one!
It is hard to get the tone of a memoir right. The author’s voice slips into see-me-as-a-martyr, or see-me-writing, or see-how-funny-I-can-be. Claire Muller avoids all these traps in Signing to the Angels. She is unfailingly honest and sincere; she does not skip the horrific hospital stays or long nights without sleep while she tells you the joys of caring for a “medically fragile” child.
In her unpolished honesty, she is as eloquent as Joan Didion on grief in The Year of Magical Thinking, and more profound than Andrew Solomon in Far From the Tree, his examination of parents of children with differences. She is like a friend who opens up her story to you, who makes you think, even if you don’t agree with her.
Muller is always looking for the blessings, even in the mundane. She poses the question that all involved parents ask themselves at some point “If I’m not Shelly’s mama, then who am I?” She does not shrink from the question of why a profoundly challenged person like her daughter should be cared for. She might have talked more about the toll on the family.
Read this book, and get to know Claire Muller. She will make you ponder what it means to be human and to be alive.
“she doesn’t know how to die.” ~ That about sums up Shelly’s reaction to life which dealt her blindness, deafness, and a messed up gut. This memoir of an amazingly beautiful redhead inspires me to quit griping - I have no scars from complicated surgeries and I certainly haven’t endured diarrhea for years. And yet, the message of this book is not ‘preachy’, but is rather a vulnerably open glimpse into both Shelly’s and her foster mom’s life. It is a full life, full of joy as well as pain. Full of friendships as well as solitude. And so very full of love. Shelly inspires me to live fearlessly. Her mother Claire inspires me to love generously. Buy this book - you will find laughter in simple moments and grief in indescribable pain and hope in God’s love and encouragement that you are not alone.
